Today, I want to speak to you about putting things above God. I know what you’re thinking “I don’t have any idols.”. I wish I could believe you, but the truth is, we humans can have many idols unbeknownst to us. Our job can become an idol. We can focus so much on making sure we are the best employee we can possible be that it takes priority over worshiping God. I am not saying that being a good employee isn’t important, but when you start to miss church more and more, or pray less and less because of your job; that becomes an idol. Anything we prioritize above God, no matter what it is becomes an idol. That job, dream, infertility, spouse or child can all become idols. Idolatry is bondage. When we feel burdened, confused, and directionless, we should take note of our priorities. Are we worshiping God, or are we idolizing the things in our lives above Him? What we worship will be either our bondage or our freedom.
So, I ask you today, are you practicing idolatry? Are you focusing so much on your infertility and dream of becoming a parent that its stealing your worship? Are you worried about losing your job to the point where it is stealing your worship from God? Is that favorite Netflix show that you love to binge watch stealing your worship from God? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then I hate to say it but that’s idolatry.
We need to break the shackles of our daily idols and find the freedom in worshiping the One True Living God. His commandments so clearly tell us not to worship anything or anyone above Him. Yet, our sinful human nature keeps us in idolatry bondage. Let’s break the cycle today. Let us set aside our idols and refocus on worshiping God. Turn off the TV show. Put the kids to bed early. Set aside your work. Instead, open the Bible. Spend time in His Word. Pray. Fast. Worship Him and only Him. That is where true freedom is.
“Then get rid of the foreign gods that are among you and turn your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel. So the people said to Joshua, “We will worship the Lord our God and obey him.” Joshua 24:23-24 CSB
